The blue coloration of the wings of the Blue Flash Butterfly is due to the special structure of the scales on its wings. These scales are neatly arranged and have many tiny ridge-like structures. When light hits the wings, optical phenomena such as refraction, reflection and interference occur in the microscopic structure of these scales. Among other things, the interference phenomenon enhances specific wavelengths of light, and the combination of these wavelengths gives our eyes the color blue. This blue color is not due to the blue pigment contained in the wings, but is an optical effect produced by the physical structure.
