Female emperor moths are sexually passive, and they release strong sexual pheromones to attract male emperor moths to approach. The feathery tentacles of male emperor moths have a keen chemical reception system, even if they are several kilometers away, as long as they are facing the wind, they can sense the pheromones released by female emperor moths. [6] The emperor moth generally does not have a stable flight habit, so the female emperor moth will not fly too far after breaking the pupae. After mating, the female emperor moths produce a certain number of eggs each time, each egg is only 2.5 mm in diameter, and they will hide the moth eggs on the dark side of the leaves to breed. After about two weeks, green caterpillars are born and devour the leaves where they were born. The back of the emperor moth larvae has a row of muscular horns covered with a layer of white wax. When the larva is about 12 cm long, it will start to form pupae among the dead leaves. The adult king moth emerges from the pupae after about four weeks.

After hatching for more than 4 weeks, the larvae complete the last molt and start to form a cocoon.
