Blue Clipper Butterfly & Parthenos Sylvia Nymphalus (scientific name: Parthenos syvia): medium size. The tan wing veins are very obvious, the outer line to the outer edge is brownish-yellow, with black horizontal stripes inside, and the outer edge is inlaid with black and white cilium; the base of the hindwing is pink-green, the midline is composed of black spots, and the outer line is radial vertical stripes and The triangular black spot is embedded with a light yellow edge, and the outer edge is black and white, forming a very beautiful pattern, especially when the wings are half-draped and half-folded. Morphological characteristics

Nymphs are medium in size. Egg: nearly spherical, 1.36-1.41 mm in diameter, 1.33-1.38 mm in height, covered with grid-like ridges and depressions, densely covered with fine hairs. Light yellow at first birth, gradually turning dark brown as the embryo develops

Larvae: 5 instars. 1-year-old head shell is brown-black, body surface is yellow-green, there are rows of hair tumors on the back and sides, and white body hair is on it. The body hair of the 2nd instar larvae disappeared, replaced by black-brown spines at the end branches, and the ends of the spines were white, especially the middle and posterior thoracic spines were the most developed. The body surface is yellowish-brown, and the dorsal midline, dorsal lateral line and upper valve line are black. Except for the growth of worms and more developed spines, the other body surface characteristics were similar to those of the 2nd instar. A row of small unbranched white spikes are attached along the base of the foot and the inferior trachea. The 5th instar larvae have a brownish-yellow head and are densely covered with black spikes. The surface of the chest and abdomen becomes dark brown, the spines are extremely developed, and the dorsal midline is black and slender. There is a wide black strip along the dorsal line and the upper line of the valve, from the chest to the buttocks. The valve cavity is black and the surrounding is white.

Pupa: hanging pupa, fusiform, 26-30 mm in length. The head is shallowly bifurcated, the pupal body is green or dark brown, the dorsal midline is raised in an arc, and the dorsal part of the middle is convex and ridged.

Adult: Large, forewings about 45-50 mm long, overwintering individuals are smaller than summer generations. Hermaphrodite, olive green on the front of the wings, black outer and submarginal bands on the forewings, and 1 row of large white spots in the middle domain. The outer edge of the hindwing is wavy, with a black outer edge, and there is a row of triangular black spots on the subedge

habitat

Mainly inhabits tropical rain forests, usually near rivers, at an altitude of about 300 meters. Mostly in low-altitude plains near the valley forest edge.

living habits

In Guanping Village, Dadugang Township, Jinghong City, Yunnan Province, China, adults are found in mountain forests below 1,200 meters above sea level. They often live in forest clearings or forest margins, feeding on rotting fruits and sap. It likes to perch on low shrubs below 2 meters in height, but rarely rests on the ground. The flight is fast, somewhat similar to the flight posture of the ringed butterfly Neptisspp.

The species is fast-flying, floats high, and is extremely difficult to catch. Likes to eat rotten fruit and tree sap. 6 generations occur in 1 year, and overwinter as diapause adults. Adults use rotten fruit and tree sap as supplementary nutrition. Eggs are scattered. There are four stages of pupa and adult. The lifespan of an adult butterfly is generally about two weeks. The male butterfly will die within a few days after mating, and the female butterfly will die when it is close to laying eggs.

Reproduction

Adults appear in the wild from March to October, with the peak from mid-May to early June. The experimental population had 6 generations per year and overwintered as diapause adults. The egg stage of the second generation is 3-4 days, the larval stage is 11-14 days, and the pupal stage is 8-10 days. It takes 25-32 days to complete a generation. It is estimated that the number of generations in the natural state should also be about 6 generations.

In the experimental spawning orchard, the female butterfly scatters the eggs on the front and back of the host's young leaves, tendrils and other objects close to the host's foliage.

Habits of larvae: 1-2 instar larvae often live on the back of the leaf tip and feed on the mesophyll, leaving the upper epidermis. Sometimes the leaves are bitten through or eaten with a V-shaped notch at the edge of the leaf. The 3rd instar larvae still stay on the underside of the leaf, but can eat all parts of the leaf except the midrib. 4-5 instar larvae inhabit the front of leaves and often move to adjacent mature leaves to feed. Larvae of all instars have the habit of suspended animation, falling to the ground when slightly disturbed. Mature larvae pupate under the host leaves. Larvae can only complete ontogeny on Passiflora longifolia. Do not eat on the three-spoon scoop, or only a small amount of food, stunted and died.
