The large purple nymph (scientific name: Sasakia charonda) is a large butterfly with a wingspan of about 86-110mm. The wings are purplish black with white spots dotted among them, the wings of males are intensely purple iridescent, the rest of the wings are dark brown, and the rump corners of the hind wings have pink spots. Female butterflies are larger, but do not have a blue-violet metallic luster.

Butterfly native to East Asia. The larvae feed on the hackberry tree of the elm family, and the adult butterfly likes to suck the sap and fermented fruit or absorb water on the ground.

The large purple nymph was originally a small number, but people cut down hackberry trees, cultivate shiitake mushrooms and damage the environment, and the number is even rarer. It has been listed as an endangered species of conservation insects in Taiwan. The butterfly is beautiful in color and very endearing. It was selected as the national butterfly in Japan.

Morphological characteristics

The wingspan is about 80~110mm. The body is huge, and the wing surface has a dark blue metallic luster.

The forewing of an adult butterfly is roughly triangular in appearance and slightly horizontally elongated. Hindwings are oval, nearly triangular in appearance, with slightly serrated outer edges. Female butterfly wings are wider and rounder

The ground color of the front and hind wings of the male butterfly is gray-black, and the base of the wing accounts for about half of the entire wing surface, which is blue-purple with metallic luster, and each wing chamber has one to three white markings. There is a slender white spot at the base of the forewing compartment 1b, and a small orange spot at the anal horn of the hind wing. habitat

The larvae usually rest on the silk seat of the host plant leaf, and in winter they crawl to the deciduous pile near the root of the host plant to overwinter. Adults live in mountainous areas between 1000 and 1500 meters above sea level

living habits

Adults fly fast. Likes to move among dense trees, likes to suck the fermented juice or decomposed juice from the trunk, and it can be seen mixed with other kinds of butterflies. The host plant is the hackberry of the elm family.

Natural enemies are spiders, mantises, frogs, dragonflies, birds and lizards. Due to its fast flight, it is not easy to capture natural enemies, but it often sucks the sap out of the trunk and ignores the surrounding danger.

Egg: The bottom is slightly flattened spherical, with obvious longitudinal ridges on the surface, pale green. The egg period is about 5-6 days. Natural enemies are all kinds of egg parasitoids, ticks and other arthropods

Larvae: The final instar larvae have a long cylindrical body, with a pair of "Y"-shaped bifurcated horns protruding on the top of the head, tapered ends of the abdominal segments, and a pair of merging protuberances.

The end-instar larvae have green heads, with horn-like protruding forked ends on the top of the head, green or yellowish-brown. The larvae are green, with dense yellow small wart spots on the body surface, an indistinct yellow twill stripe near the stomata on the side of the body, and three pairs of yellow triangular scale-like protrusions on the back of the body, and the stomata are light green.

The final instar larvae are about 58-65 mm in length.

Overwintering larvae in winter will crawl to the deciduous piles near the root of the host plant to overwinter, and the larvae during the growth period usually rest on the silk seat of the host plant's leaves.

The natural enemies are parasitic wasps, parasitic flies, wasps, stink bugs, lizards and birds.

The life cycle of this species is one generation per year, and it will overwinter as larvae in winter, and the larval period lasts for more than half a year.

In winter, the overwintering larvae will crawl to the deciduous piles near the heel of the host plant to overwinter still, while the larvae during the growth period usually rest on the silk seat of the host plant leaf, and their appearance resembles a slug, so as to confuse the eyes and ears of most natural enemies. In addition, the head of the larva has a horn-like protrusion with small thorns. When it encounters harassment, it will twist its head left and right to defend against various predatory natural enemies.

Pupa: The appearance of the pupa is laterally flat and close to leaf-like. The front end of the head has a pair of short horn-like protrusions, the mid-thorax and the back are not obvious, and the end of the abdomen is curved.

The pupal body is pale green in color, and the horn-like protrusion at the front end of the head is yellow at the end. There is a light yellow vertical stripe on the central dorsal line from the mid-thorax to the end of the abdominal segment, and the wing buds, thoracic segment and abdominal segment have green diagonal stripes, simulating leaf vein lines, and the stomata are black.

The length of the pupa is about 38~43mm.

The pupal stage is about 20 to 30 days, depending on the temperature.

Mature larvae pupate among hidden plants, mimicking plant leaves to avoid predators.

The natural enemies of the pupal stage are parasitic wasps, wasps, bees and various fungi.

Adult: Lifespan is about 2 to 3 months.
