Columns, with 2 small black spots on the outer side of each ring; brown and white horizontal stripes with black pinstripes in the middle interior of the forewings

distribution range

Domestic distribution in Jiangxi, Fujian, Guangdong, Hainan, Guangxi, Sichuan, Yunnan.

Distributed abroad in Myanmar, Thailand, Malaysia, Nepal, Sikkim, Bhutan, India

life history

In Xishuangbanna, the butterfly has 7 generations per year, and the 7th generation 3rd instar larvae overwinter. The overwintering time is from December to mid-February of the following year. The remaining generations have a duration of 35-40d, indoor 21-28 ℃, egg stage 8-11d, larval stage 12-16d, pupal stage 8-9d, female lifespan 12-18d, male lifespan 6-10d. The larvae have 4 instars in total. The 1-2 instar larvae feed on young leaves and like to cluster; the 3-4 instar larvae feed on young leaves, twigs and old leaves; of 78.98%. The larvae like to eat three scoops, and the adults like to visit lantana, elixir, bougainvillea and other flowering plants. In captivity, adult mating rates and egg production are related to net chamber size and butterfly density

living habits

Adult habit

Adults in the wild are mostly active in glades and sunny open areas on the edge of forests, and sometimes also look for nectar plants in plain areas. They like to visit lantana flowers, and sometimes they eat fermented fruit juice or even animal feces. In spawning gardens, flowers in colors such as red, orange and yellow are most attractive to adults, and feeding trays covered with red cloth attract large numbers of adults to feed. Wings are mostly closed when still feeding, and occasionally they are spread out. It flies slowly, resting on low bushes and closes its wings when resting, but it has the habit of spreading its wings in the morning to bask in the sun. The female adults fly around the lower part of the host plant for a long time before laying eggs, looking for a suitable place to lay eggs. If not disturbed, the female butterfly will only lay eggs once a day. The eggs are mostly laid on the tendrils of the host, the underside of the leaves, young leaves and shoots, and occasionally on the front of the leaves and young shoots. The eggs are distributed in sheets or strings, with 12 to 134 eggs per sheet or string. After laying several eggs, the adult worm moves slightly forward. The number of eggs in the egg mass is related to whether the female adults are disturbed in laying eggs and the age of the adults. The courtship behavior was a typical "cruising type", and the male adults were also interested in the dead female adults on the ground, and no obvious territoriality was found. Mating occurs in the morning on a sunny day, and the mating sites are mostly hidden places such as under the leaves of plants, and sometimes also on the wall of the spawning garden. When mating, the wings of the two adults are closed and their backs are erected in a "one" arrangement. When disturbed, the male adult leaves with the female adult

Larval Habits

The 1st to 5th instar larvae have strong aggregation habit, especially the 1st to 3rd instar larvae have the highest cluster density. Larvae hatch in the morning. When hatching, the larvae crawl out with their heads propped open. Many embryos die in late embryonic development. The newly hatched larvae feed on the egg shell and wait nearby for other larvae of the same egg mass or cluster to hatch, and do not immediately find a suitable place to feed. After all the eggs in the same egg mass hatch, all the larvae gather on the opposite side of the young leaves, mainly near the tip of the leaf, sometimes as many as nearly a hundred, feeding on the mesophyll and epidermis, and the remaining midrib and thicker lateral veins, sometimes also. Remaining upper epidermis, leaving large nicks on leaf margins, or forming broad and reticulated perforations on leaves. The larvae devour the leaves and transfer them collectively. Individual larvae temporarily leave the group during the activity, but can also join the group again later. If the larvae occasionally fall off the ground or move away from the original colony for other reasons, they will also seek other larval colonies of the same species to join after re-climbing on the host plant, even if the age is different. If there is no conspecific larval colony on the host plant, the stray larvae are also added to the same genus of the larval colony of S. Large numbers of larvae often slough off host tendrils, for reasons that are unclear. When it is close to peeling, the thoracic and abdominal sections of the larvae are swollen, especially the prothorax, and the head is stretched forward. The individual who peels first remains waiting for other individuals in the same group to peel. The 2nd instar larvae still gather under the host leaves to feed, and can eat most of the leaves, sometimes leaving the midrib microtubule bundles. After the 3rd instar, larvae can gather on the front of leaves, young shoots and petioles to feed, and most of them maintain the habit of gathering until they pupate, but the group will become smaller and smaller, and individual individuals will move out of the group. The larvae feed on leaves, tendrils and young stems, and can consume petioles and occasionally old yellow leaves. When food is insufficient, it also feeds on the epidermis of the host stem. Mature larvae prefer to pupate in open and dry places, such as under the host leaves, under the lid of the insect cup and on the top of the cage. Overwintering larvae still feed on the basal bark of the host plant without entering diapause.

main value

The Red Saw Nymph is one of the most showy species of the domestic Nymphalus. The adults fly low and slow, which is very suitable for use in butterfly ornamental gardens, and is also an excellent butterfly species for craft production and festive flying. There is no record of harm to the economy and garden plants, and the ecological risk of flying and utilization in various places is low. The generation cycle is short, the eggs are produced together, and the larvae feed in groups, which are suitable for indoor breeding. The breeding should be widely promoted in various parts of the south.
