Vanessa Cardui & Painted Lady (scientific name: Vanessa cardui) is a beautiful butterfly of the genus Vanessa in the family Nymphalidae. The colors are bright and the patterns are quite complex. The body is small; the wings are large; the antennae are straight and rod-shaped; the front feet are rather degenerate, short and clawless. Forewing R veins 5, often shared stalk. Eggs come in a variety of shapes, such as hemispherical, bun-shaped, melon-shaped or bowl-shaped. The larvae often have protrusions on the head, thorns on the somites, and 1 to 3 hooks on the toes of the abdomen in the middle, without spinning cocoons. The pupae are weeping pupae with horns.

Appearance feature

Small red nymphalate with a wingspan of 4.7-6.5 cm. The back of the wings is orange and brown; the ends of the wings are black, with obvious leucorrhea and small white spots. The ventral surface of the wings is dull, brown or gray. The difference from the big red nymphalus is that there are several small white spots near the top corner of the forewing, and there are red and yellow irregular horizontal bands in the mid-wing area;

The compound eyes of the little red butterfly are bare; the lower lip whiskers are thick. The antennae are long, with scales, and the ends are marked with hammers. Forewing with 5 radial veins and 1 gluteal vein; hind wing with 2 gluteal veins and shoulder veins. The wing shape changes greatly, and the color of the wing surface is very rich. The middle chamber is usually closed chamber on the front wings and open chamber on the hind wings. There are 2 grooves at the base isolated from the middle ridge of the head; the forefeet of both sexes are degenerated, retracted under the thorax, and have no effect. Nymphalus larvae are caterpillars. After hatching, they eat a lot of plant leaves. As the larvae grow, they usually molt 4 to 6 times. The larvae have 5 instars and pupate after about 12-18 days.

Once fully grown, the nymphal larvae stop feeding and crawl around looking for a suitable place to pupate. The pupa of the butterfly family Nymphalidae is suspended from the head and the tail, called the hanging pupa; they will stretch the body to measure whether the space around is enough for the broken pupa to spread its wings smoothly when it emerges. When it finds a place to pupate, the butterfly spins silk there, attaching the end of its body to the silk, and the nymph larvae pupate on the underside of the leaf in a hidden place, and then gradually harden to become a prepupa. About a day later, the former pupae shed the larval outer skin, revealing the chrysalis. Within the pupa, the larvae's utensils gradually break down and then reconstitute the body of the butterfly. The pupal period is about 10 days.
