Eurema hecabe, the broad-brimmed yellow cabbage butterfly, is a member of the white butterfly family and is widely distributed. The life cycle consists of adults and eggs. Larva, pupa have 4 stages. The host is Mimaceae; Euphorbiaceae; Hematoxylinaceae; Hypericaceae; Rhamnaceae; Adult: Female body length 13.6-18.6mm, wingspan 36.2-51.6mm. Male body length 12.5-17.6mm, wingspan 35.5-49.2mm. The antennae are short, and the rod-shaped part is black. The larvae use chewing mouthparts to feed on the leaves of the host. Natural enemies can parasitize eggs, larvae and pupae.

Morphological characteristics

Adult: Female body length 13.6-18.6mm, wingspan 36.2-51.6mm. Male body length 12.5-17.6mm, wingspan 35.5-49.2mm. The antennae are short, and the rod-shaped part is black. Wings dark yellow to yellowish white. The front edge of the forewing is black, and the outer edge has a wide black band, from the front edge to the posterior horn, the inner side is finger-like concave outward at the M3 and Cu1 veins. The male butterfly is dark in color, with elongated spots on both sides of the inferior ventricular vein. The outer margin of the hindwings is narrow and indistinct with black bands, or there are only venous spots. The reverse side of the forewing is covered with small brown spots, there are 2 spots in the middle chamber of the forewing, and there is a kidney-shaped spot on the terminal vein of the middle chamber. There are scattered dots on the reverse side of the hind wings, there is a kidney-shaped pattern at the end of the middle chamber, and the outer edge is irregular arc-shaped because the m3 chamber is slightly protruding.

Male external genitalia broad dorsally, triangular in dorsal view, somewhat concave in the back, completely ossified; claw-shaped process usually very short; sac-shaped process medium long; : 1 in the middle, 1 in the terminal margin, with 2 long inner protrusions on the ventral margin, the bases of which are close to each other; the penis is slender, with micro-spikes at the end; the base ring of the penis is weakly ossified, wide Leaf-like, with a short stalk at the base, and deep centrally parted at the end.

The female external genitalia has a long egg-laying valve; the anterior epidermal process is almost straight, close to the length of the posterior epidermal process, and there is an obvious verrucous process on the dorsal edge of the base; the opening of the mating hole is at the front end of the genital lamella; the sac duct is almost as long as the sac neck , membranous, but the anterior 1/2 is weakly ossified; the cystic process is large, the middle part is slightly contracted, and there are many small odontoid processes.

Egg: nearly fusiform, milky white, long diameter 1.3-1.6mm, short diameter 0.32-0.45mm: egg surface has 51-59 longitudinal ridges and 61-74 transverse ridges.

Larvae: Mature larvae have a body length of 28.0-33.4mm and a head width of 2.84-3.32mm. Body dark green, head light green, with dark green reticulation; valve line gray-white, light black below the valve line, a pale yellow kidney-shaped spot on the subdorsal line of the 6th abdominal segment; each body segment has 5-6 small The link is densely covered with small nodules, and the end of the body hair is spherical: the toe hook is a tri-order middle band.

Pupa: Length 18.9-21.3mm, average 19.9mm; width 5.9-7.0mm, average 6.3mm. Nearly triangular, tapered at both ends, with raised and swollen middle wing buds; pale green body, some individuals have irregular black spots on the body, and 72-90 barbs on the ventral rump spine, shaped like an anchor

After eclosion, they often lie still for 3-5 hours before they start flying and feeding. The eclosion rate of each generation is 84.8%-90.5%. Mating begins 2-3 days after eclosion. Mating mostly at 14-16. Mating lasted 95--150min. Females mate once in their lifetime, and rarely twice. Adults often feed on plant nectar as a supplement. Male adults live 3-9 days, female adults 5-13 days. Eggs are mostly produced on the young leaves of the black wattle tree in the middle and lower parts of the forest margin, and are scattered. Each female can lay 27-146 eggs, with an average of 89 eggs. The spawning period is 2-3 days.
