The cabbage white butterfly, also known as the cabbage white butterfly, and the larvae of the cabbage caterpillar, is the most common and most serious pest in China. There are as many as 35 kinds of known host plants in 9 families. They are addicted to cruciferous plants, especially cabbage, cauliflower, cabbage and radish with thick leaves. In the absence of cruciferous plants, other host plants can also be eaten, such as Compositae, cauliflower, nasturtaceae, lily, comfrey, oleicaceae and other plants.

Appearance feature

The cabbage butterfly is a complete metamorphosis, divided into four stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult.

Adults have a body length of 12 to 20 mm and a wingspan of 45 to 55 mm. The male body is milky white, the female is slightly darker, yellowish-white. The leading edge and base of the female forewings are mostly black, with a large triangular black spot on the top corner, and two black round spots on the outer side of the middle chamber, side by side. The base of hind wings is gray-black, and there is a black spot on the front edge, which connects with the black spot behind the forewing when the wings are unfolded. The gray-black part of the front wing of the male insect is smaller, and the two black spots on the middle and lower part of the wings are only obvious in the front. Adults often have two types of males and females, and there are also two types of seasons, that is, there are spring and summer types.

Eggs, erect bottle-shaped, about 1 mm high and 0.4 mm short diameter. Light yellow at first birth, later turned orange-yellow, and lavender-gray before hatching. There are many vertical and horizontal ridges on the surface of the eggshell, forming a small rectangular grid, and the eggs are scattered.

Larvae, commonly known as cabbage worms. The larvae have a total of 5 instars, and the last instar larvae are 28 to 35 mm long. The larvae are gray-yellow at the beginning of hatching, then turn blue-green, with a cylindrical body, a hypertrophy in the middle, an inconspicuous intermittent yellow longitudinal line on the back, a yellow spiracle line, and two macular spots on the line of each segment. The body is densely covered with small black hair tumors, and each body segment has 4 to 5 transverse wrinkles.

Pupa, 18-21 mm long, spindle-shaped, tapered at both ends, swollen and angular in the middle. Body color varies with the attachments during pupation, including green, light brown, and grayish yellow. Male pupae only have one genital hole in the ninth abdominal segment, while female pupae have one caudal hole and genital hole in the eighth and ninth segments, respectively.

life history and habits

Cabbage white butterflies are common in different places, and the annual algebra is different in different places. It gradually increases from north to south. 3 to 4 generations per year in Northeast China, 5 to 6 generations in Huanghuai region, 7 to 9 generations in Yangtze River Basin, and about 12 generations in Guangzhou. There is no diapause in South China, and all insect states can overwinter. In other places, they overwinter as pupae. Overwintering places are mostly in fences, wall crevices, under bark, in soil crevices or among weeds and dead leaves near the affected vegetable fields. In the north, they generally overwinter in places where the environment is dry and without direct sunlight, and in the south, they overwinter in the sunny side.

The emergence time of overwintering pupae varies greatly across the country. In the southern part of the Yangtze River, it emerges from February to April in the early spring of the second year, from April to May in North China, and from May to June in Northeast China. Due to the complex environment in which the overwintering pupae live and the large temperature difference, the eclosion period of the overwintering adults lasts for a long time, and the eclosion period can last as long as a month. This is the main reason for the overlapping of generations in the field in the future, and it also brings certain difficulties to prediction and prevention. The peak of the year also varies from place to place. In the south, the spring and early summer (April-June) and early autumn (September-November) are in full bloom twice, in North China in May-June and August-September, and in the Northeast region in July and September.

The adult cabbage white butterfly is active during the day, especially at noon on a sunny day. The eclosion adults feed on nectar, mate and lay eggs. Only one egg is produced at a time. The eggs are scattered on the front or back of the leaves, but most are on the back of the leaves. In summer, they are more prolific on the back of the host leaf, and in winter, they are more abundant on the front of the leaf. Adults clearly tended to lay eggs on cauliflower and cabbage, followed by cabbage and cabbage. Cabbage butterfly likes to lay eggs on such plants mainly because such vegetables contain mustard oil glycosides, which can attract adults to lay eggs. Each female lays more than 100 to 200 eggs, and many can reach more than 500 eggs. The overwintering generation and the first generation of adults lay more eggs. The eggs are pale yellow and piled together. Newly hatched larvae feed on egg shells and then leaves. The 1st to 2nd instar larvae have the habit of spinning and falling, the larvae move slowly, and the older larvae have suspended animation, and can curl up and fall to the ground when disturbed. When the larvae are mature, they crawl to the hidden place, first secrete mucus to stick the buttocks and feet in place, then spin silk to wrap the body, and then pupate.

In the north, the first generation of larvae appeared in early and mid-May, and the peak period of spring damage was from late May to early June. The 2nd-3rd generation larvae appeared in July-August, at this time, due to the high temperature, the number of larvae decreased significantly. After August, as the temperature drops, it is the growing season of autumn vegetables, which is conducive to the growth and development of this insect. Therefore, August to October is the peak period of 4-5 generations of larvae damage, and autumn vegetables can be seriously damaged. After the middle and late October, the old larvae have successively pupated and overwintered.

The optimum temperature for the development of cabbage butterfly is 20-25 ℃, and the relative humidity is about 76%. Under suitable conditions, the egg stage is 4 to 8 days; the larval stage is 11 to 22 days; the pupal stage is about 10 days (except overwintering pupae); the adult stage is about 5 days.
