Atrophaneura varuna (White, 1842) is a species of the Papilionidae family, Atrophaneura varuna (White, 1842).

Morphological characteristics

Adult: Wingspan 88-132 mm. The head, thorax, and ventral sides are red, and the back is black. Wings black and veined on both sides grayish white or grayish brown. There are 4 black stripes in the interior of the forewing, of which 1/3 of the bases of the 2nd and 3rd are healed. The hindwings are dark in color, narrower, and wavy at the outer edge. The reverse side of the wing is similar to the front side.

The uncinate process of the male external genitalia is slender, with a pointed end and strong ossification. The jaws are partially ossified and very long, with hairs. The flaps of the clasps are wide and short, the belly of the clasps and the back of the clasps are ossified, the ends are protruding and pointed, and the ends of the clasps are flush and concave. The inner process of the clasps is strongly ossified, arc-shaped, the middle of the inner edge is prominent, and the end is pointed. The penis is stubby.

The female external genitalia is semicircular, with a few strong spines; the mating hole is wide, with a hyoid-shaped ossified protrusion in the middle; the anterior vulva is strongly ossified, and the structure is complex but regular. The cystic duct is short and wide, membranous; the cystic process is very long, almost as long as the mating sac, spear-shaped, and consists of small protrusions forming regular folds.

Eggs: Slightly spherical, purple-red. There is 1 red protrusion on the top centerline, and 20 yellow attachments in the warp direction leading to the bottom.

Larvae: 1st instar larvae have a head width of about 0.89 mm. The head is dark brown with strong luster and black hair. Pronotum dark brown glossy, with a pair of short protrusions with black hairs. Smelly horn pale yellow. The body is purplish red, but the chest and abdomen are yellowish brown. Sarcomas on the subdorsal line are white on the 3rd, 4th, and 7th abdominal segments and dark red on other segments, but lighter on the 8th and 9th abdominal segments. The upper plate of the anus is chitinized, yellowish-brown, with black hairs and a pair of tumor-like processes. The head width of mature larvae is 3.62 mm. The body color and markings are roughly the same as the first instar larvae, but the background color is darker, there are gray spots on the back of each segment, and the fleshy protrusions on the lower line of the 3rd and 7th abdominal throttle are white.

Chrysalis: and Mashu Papilio A. Nox is similar, but the protrusions of each body segment are smaller than those of the Mashu wind butterfly. The head has a pair of short serrated protrusions. There is a dark red stripe on the prothorax and a pair of glands on both sides of the stripe. The ears on both sides of the front chest are short. There are inverted U-shaped glandular protrusions on the back of the midthorax and large ear-like protrusions on the sides. There are arc-like protrusions on the sides of the back thorax and the 1-3 abdominal segments, and the back of these segments has dark red markings. There are 2 pairs on the back of the metathorax, and 1 pair of dark red tumor-like protrusions on the subdorsal line of the first abdominal segment. There is a pair of short and sharp dark red protrusions on the subdorsal line of the 2nd and 3rd abdominal segments. There is a pair of thin plate-like protrusions on the subdorsal line of the 4th to 8th abdominal segments, the anterior edge of which is pointed. There is an ear-like protrusion on the lower line of the fourth abdominal throttle, and a small protrusion on the lower line of the fifth to seventh abdominal throttle. Body color light brown. The abdomen is clearly curved forward and the entire body is S-shaped when viewed from the side.
