The swallowtail butterfly (Iphiclides podalirius (Linnaeus) is an animal in the family Papilionidae. Also known as the European apricot swallowtail. It is mainly distributed in Central Asia, Europe, northern Africa; Xinjiang; Longnan and other regions.

Morphological characteristics

Adult Wingspan 70mm. Wings yellow. The forewing has 7 black transverse bands, the 1st, 2nd, 4th and 7th mid-term reach the trailing edge, and the 3rd and 5th only reach the middle of the wing. There is a black band on the rear edge and the middle of the hind wing, and the outer black band is inlaid with 5 crescent spots. The front edge of the mid-term is yellow, and the remaining 4 are blue; the rump corner has a black and blue heart. Triangular spots and yellow horizontal spots. The 4th base half of the reverse of the forewing is inlaid with a yellow stripe, and the 6th is split into 2 black stripes; the middle of the reverse of the hindwing has an orange thin line in the middle of the black band. The upper hook process of the male external genitalia is absent; claw-shaped process leaf-shaped, membranous; the clavicular valve is triangular, with a long spike at the end; the inner process is broad-lobed; the penis end base ring "Y" shape; Curved, broad and trapezoidal at the base, slender and pointed at the ends. The egg-laying valve of the female external genitalia is semicircular, and the mating hole is wide; the sac duct is short and wide, almost as wide as the mating sac, and the mating sac neck is slightly narrow; the mating sac is long and has no cystic process.

The head of the 1st instar larvae is dark brown and shiny, with black hairs. The stinky horn is pale yellow and transparent. The pronotum is dark brown and shiny, with a pair of black-brown protrusions on both sides, with branched hairs on the protrusions. Body black, with pale sides. The anterior border to the lateral side of the prothorax is pale yellow, and there is a large pale yellow spot on the back of the back of the thorax, part of which extends to the mid-thorax. The 4th and 5th abdominal segments have large pale yellow spots, part of which extend to the 3rd abdominal segment. The back of the ninth abdominal segment is all pale yellow. The bristles on the body surface are Y-shaped, mixed with normal hairs. The 2nd instar larvae have a green head, the upper part is slightly brown, and have black normal hairs. Some hairs have round black stripes around the base. The pronotum is green, with green tumor-like protrusions on both sides, and short black hairs on the protrusions. Body color is green, with pale undersides. It has short black hair all over its body. There is a thin yellow general band on the topline. There is a small round yellow spot on the subdorsal line of each segment from the midthorax to the ninth abdominal segment. These round blobs of the sections are connected by a less pronounced diagonal yellow line. , there is a small white round spot on the lower line of each throttle from the mid-thorax to the 8th abdominal segment. The head of the 3rd instar larvae turned solid green, and the stinky horns were yellowish. The 4th instar larvae are yellow-orange. The 5th instar larvae are orange-red horns, small round spots on the dorsal line of each subsegment, on the spiracle line and orange-red in front of the body, and yellow in the rear.

Pupa: The body is slightly cannonball-shaped, with a pair of heads and a low and pointed protrusion on the back of the mid-thorax. There is a pair of ear-like protrusions at the base of the forewing on the side of the midthorax. There are 4 bulges on the back of the mid-thorax: 1 extending from the front of the backline to the front edge of the forechest; The brown-type pupae are orange-brown in color, with yellow reticulations on the wings. There are 2 pairs of oblique lines near the upper line of the valve line of each air joint of the abdomen. Body length 24mm.
