The jade-spotted swallowtail Papilio helenus (Linnaeus, 1758), also known as the white-striped swallowtail, is a large species of the genus Papilio in the family Papilioidae. Hermaphrodite; body wings are black, with 3 juxtaposed white spots on the front and outer edges of the hind wings, a row of fuzzy crescent-shaped red spots on the sub-outer edge, and a tail process; there is a row on the sub-outer edge of the rear wing Eye-catching crescent-shaped erythema, with 1-2 round red spots on the rump corner; female butterfly color light brown.

Morphological characteristics

Egg: nearly spherical, 1.20-1.30mm in diameter, 0.95-1.10mm in height; pale yellow, with smooth surface and pearly luster.

Larvae: 5 instars. 1-4 years old are guano-like. 1-year-old dark brown to yellowish brown, with many spiny hairs. The spines of the 2-4 instar larvae disappeared, and the warts were not raised high; the body surface was yellowish brown, and there was a white oblique band from the 2nd abdominal throttle line to the dorsal line of the 4th abdominal segment. 5th instar larvae have smooth, yellow-green body surface; there are 1 black false eye on the back of the mid-thorax, the edge of the false eye is dark brown, there are 2 white spots on the upper edge, and there is a black-brown horizontal line in the inner center; between the two false eyes on the back There are stained patterns; the posterior edge of the first abdominal segment has a yellow-brown stripe, and the front edge of the band is toothed; the base of the fourth abdominal segment has a dark brown oblique band extending backward and upward to the dorsal midline of the fifth abdominal segment There is also a dark brown oblique band from the base of the foot of the fifth abdominal segment to the rear end of the dorsal midline of the segment; the base of the abdominal foot is white.

Pupa: Hanged pupa, 34-37mm long, 13-14mm wide; the fork at the front end is long, and the back is upturned; the middle thoracic dorsal plate is raised upward; the abdomen is protruding outwardly and the back is concave; green and brown Type 2: Green-type pupae are formed when pupating on outdoor host plants, and brown-type pupae are formed when pupating indoors.

Body and wings are black. Hind wings have 3 large white or pale yellow spots close to each other, orange-yellow in the depression on the wing margin, red crescent spots on the sub-margin, 2 red spots on the buttocks in a circle; the reverse side of the wing is similar to the front, but the markings Clear and obvious.

This species of swallowtail resembles the broad-banded swallowtail P.nepheles, which can be distinguished from the features of the hindwing markings.

Adult habit

The adult habit of this species is very similar to that of the American Papilio. The two species often occur together in southern Yunnan, but the Papilio is dominant in number, especially in the low-altitude valleys. It can be seen in forest areas and agricultural areas, especially near citrus orchards. Adults fly fast and visit the flowers of lantana, stinky peonies and citrus plants. Male adults often gather in mountain roads, wetlands or river beaches to suck sewage, and continuously discharge fluids from the anus. The adult females lay their eggs scattered on the abaxial margins and young shoots of the host's young leaves. In the experimental egg-laying orchard, the plants that female adults choose to lay eggs include pomelo, a cultivar of citrus, citron and Zanthoxylum bungeanum, and the plants that female adults do not choose to lay eggs include Smelly Wuyu, Evodia, Chuanhuangbo and Feilong Palm blood.
