Papilio polytes (scientific name: Papilio polytes) is a species of the genus Papilio subgenus. It is a kind of swallowtail widely distributed in Asia and even Eastern Europe, and it is quite common.

Papilio likes to visit flowers, especially lantana, dragon boat flower, jasmine and other plants. The host plants are mostly magnoliaceae and rutaceae plants. Because it is harmful to agriculture, orchards should pay attention to prevention and control. Jade-belt swallowtails are mostly active in urban areas, foothills, forest margins and flower beds.

The jade-belt swallowtail has a wingspan of 77-95mm, and is dioecious. The male butterfly traverses the entire wing like a jade belt, hence the name.

Due to the pleomorphic females of the jade-banded swallowtail butterfly, the coloration varies greatly, so there are many subspecies. There are 4 subspecies in China.

Morphological characteristics

The adult body length of the jade belt swallowtail butterfly is 25-28mm, and the wingspan is 77-95mm. The whole is black. The head is large, the compound eyes are dark brown, the antennae are rod-shaped, and there are 10 small white spots on the back of the chest, in two columns.

The female butterfly of Form stichius mimics the red pearl swallowtail, with very similar markings but a black body.

Form romulus

The female butterfly of Form romulus mimics the South Asian Papilio, which can also be identified by body color.

Papilio larvae are 45mm long, with yellowish-brown head, green to dark green body, and a pair of purple-red odorous glandular horns on the prothorax. Metathorax hypertrophy healed with the first abdominal segment, there is a tooth-shaped black horizontal stripe on the front edge of the back chest, there are 4 gray-purple spots in the middle, and black eye spots on both sides; there is a black horizontal band on the front edge of the second abdominal segment; 4 5. There is a black-brown oblique band on each side of the 5 abdominal segment, with yellow, green, purple, and gray spots on the band; The larvae have a total of 5 instars: the first instar is yellowish white; the second instar is yellowish brown; the third instar is dark brown. The 1-3 instars have fleshy protrusions and light-colored markings, similar to bird droppings; the 4th instar is oily green, and the markings on the body are similar to those of mature larvae

The jade belt swallowtail is mostly active in urban areas, foothills, forest margins and flower beds (especially some citrus orchards).

Reproduction

Jade-belt Papilio has 3-4 generations in Henan, 4-5 generations in Zhejiang, Sichuan and Jiangxi, and 5-6 generations in Fujian and Guangdong. Every year in late spring and early summer, female butterflies lay eggs on the leaves of citrus and other plants, one at a time, and many eggs can be laid. The occurrence period of each generation of adults in Huangyan, Zhejiang was in the first half of May; the middle and late June; the middle and late July; the middle and late August; the middle and late September. The occurrence period of each generation in Guangdong is from early to mid-March; from early April to early May; from late May to mid-June; from late June to July; from late July to early October; from late October to November . The 6th generation pupae overwinter, and the overwintering pupa period is 103-121 days.
